The Mayfair Club volunteer members along with The Layton’s successfully
presented the 14 th Annual New Zealand Five May 17 th . How lucky we were
to enjoy great weather and this time a first ever 50 players, 10 teams. Our
guests from North Battleford, Moose Jaw and Regina clubs were in
attendance and we are always so pleased to see them and renew
acquaintances. Our friends and neighbor club of Nutana are always in
strong attendance and are always helpful in finding players to fill the
positions.
Bill Edwards of the Saskatoon Funeral Home and companies has been our
major sponsor for the past 14 years. We enjoyed his attendance at this
year’s event along with his wife Eleanor, so that we could thank him in
person for his support. Two other supports this year were The Layton’s and
Shawna Pickrell.
During the opening of this event, Arlene Chermishnok , President enjoyed
the pleasure of presently the Award of Merit, a volunteer jacket, supplied by
Bowls Sask to our recipient Mary Glenister. Mary’s unique talent of
beautification of our club was again on display. She also, volunteers in so
many other ways.
Since, our club is celebrating 100 years in 2025. We began with presenting
each player with a cloth and flipping coin, designed by Nick Jones of
Moose Jaw depicting 100 years. A lunch, that was included in registration
fees was advertised as a burger, chips and a drink, overwhelmingly came
with a feast like no other. A thank you to the BBQ man who donates a
couple hours each year to cook, so all Mayfair members are able to play.
To note, that anyone can play the game of bowls from a very early age to
almost 100 years. We asked players to “REVEAL” their ages and come
forth to choose either spray chalk or grippo as token of longevity within the
game of bowls. Our early age starter was Tyler Sheffied, our Jr. bowler and
we had 9 other 80 plus players in attendance.
The Layton’s, who have presented this tournament for 14 years,
announced they are handing the reins to others.
