MAYFAIR’S FIRST ANNUAL MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
SEPT 7, 2024
We were honored to be able to enjoy memories of Bud Mowery at our first annual memorial tournament. The emphasis on Bud’s comments regarding a bowl, that was delivered and was worthy of his “It’s a beauty” was our theme for the day. Each player who had a comment of such on the greens, was asked to place a loonie in the bowl for donation to the Aviation Museum, where many of Bud’s volunteer hours were spent repairing planes.
We were thankful for the presence of both Bud’s wife, Elsie and daughter Denyse, as well as bowlers from the Nutana, Moose Jaw and North Battleford clubs.
Hilda Voth presented memories of Bud’s bowling career that reached beyond Mayfair to his accomplishments at both the Provincial and National levels.
Denyse thanked Mayfair for honoring her father and presented Mayfair with Bud’s Bowls Sask uniform and volunteer jacket, as well as his set of bowls. The bowls will be presented to a Mayfair bowler who expresses the pleasure of playing at Mayfair for years to come.
A New Zealand Five format was enjoyed by 40 players, as well as shared positions for those that were unable to complete a full day of bowling. All eight teams were awarded prize money.
Bud was an enthusiastic volunteer at the Saskatchewan Aviation Museum so $200 was donated in Bud’s name.
The following was written by Hilda Voth to honor Bud:
Glenn (Bud) Mowery was a member of MLBC from 2001 to 2022, 22 seasons. He was a serious, competitive bowler who rarely missed regular evening bowling. He loved to participate in local and provincial competitions and often came home with a medal.
Bud, Gord Ferguson, and Ray Perpick represented Saskatchewan in a number of National Championships on the Senior Men’s Triples team in Sarnia, Ontario; Montreal, Quebec; and in Calgary, Alberta, and at least once in the Men’s Fours in Winnipeg. He also frequently competed in Mixed Pairs with Clem Grant who was a member of this club for over 25 years.
Bud had a few unique mannerisms associated with his bowling. When he was preparing to deliver a bowl he would bounce it up and down in his hand before making the delivery. When he was in the head he would indicate with his cap where he wanted the next bowl to be positioned. When he failed to make the shot he intended to, he would take out his frustration on his cap by stomping on it. And as those who bowled with Bud will remember, he often exclaimed “It’s a beauty!” when someone made a good shot.
Bud’s wife, Elsie, and their beloved dog, Stanley, accompanied him to all events. We could even say, Stanley bowled in Calgary, and there are photos to prove it.
Before retirement, Bud was an aircraft engineer. His mechanical knowledge and expertise was put to good use in repairing and maintaining our greens keeping machinery. He spent countless hours fixing equipment or transporting it back and forth from the supplier in Warman. Bud also did his fair share of operating the equipment and maintaining the greens. Bud was chosen as Mayfair’s “Volunteer of the Year” in 2006.
Bud’s Saskatchewan bowling uniform – jacket and pants, as well as his volunteer jacket have been donated to our club to be used as we choose. Some photos of Bud and his bowling buddies and competitors are posted in the club house for us to view.
Those of us who bowled with Bud miss his presence, but we are pleased that Elsie and their daughter, Denyse, have joined us today to commemorate his contributions to our club.
